Slots based on comic books are one of the most popular games among online casino players. There are two main companies creating comic books, Marvel and DC, and we will focus on them in this article. Comparing Marvel to DC is like comparing a red apple to a green apple. Some people like red apples and some people like green apples. So which kind of apples do you prefer?

When we compared the numbers, we found that Marvel comics are more popular among software providers, as currently there are 38 slots based on Marvel comic books and only 7 slots based on DC comics. The most productive software provider in terms of comic book slots is Cryptologic with a total of 25 slots (19 based on Marvel and 5 based on DC comics). Only two other game developers (Playtech and Microgaming) decided to buy the rights to create games based on these popular comic books. As the result, Playtech produced 19 Marvel slots, while Microgaming released 2 slots based on DC comics character – Batman. 

Let’s focus on Marvel slots first. Both Cryptologic and Playtech produced slots with the following well-known characters and hero teams: Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Wolverine, X-Men, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Electra, Blade, Daredevil and Punisher. However, Cryptologic also used a few less known Marvel heroes, such as the Sub-Mariner, Silver Surfer and Conan the Barbarian, as inspiration for their games. The main difference between these two software providers is that Cryptologic based their slots only on original comic books, while Playtech used images from both comic books and their movie adaptations. 

All Marvel slots are packed with special features, such as Wilds, Scatters, Free Spins and Bonus games. They are also linked to progressive jackpots. While playing Playtech slots you can hit one of 4 progressive jackpots called Power, Extra Power, Super Power and Ultimate Power. Most of Cryptologic slots is linked to 3 progressive Marvel jackpots: Hero Jackpot, Super Hero Jackpot and the biggest Marvel Hero Jackpot, however, Conan the Barberian and The Avengers are linked to the so called Crazy Jackpot. 

As for the slots based on DC comic books, they cover only 5 heroes: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash. All slots from Cryptologic feature original characters taken straight from the comic books, while Microgaming decided to use images from two blockbuster movies: The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. 

As you could expect from such renowned software providers and Microgaming and Cryptologic, all their games offer multiple special features, including Wilds, Scatters, Free Spins and Bonus games. However, only The Dark Knight from Microgaming is linked to a progressive jackpot (4 progressive jackpots to be precise). Other games offer high fixed jackpots.
