Lawyers believe the new system will not be in operation until the end of 2015.
Lawyer Ewout Keuleers is of opinion that political differences over an appropriate taxation for online gaming could delay the new regulatory and licensing regime in the Netherlands by as much as a year.
It took over three years for Dutch lawmakers to reach agreement on the right framework for the regulation of online gambling and a draft Remote Gambling Bill is currently waiting for final approval from the parliament.
However, the Dutch Labor Party wants to see an equal tax rate for both land and remote gambling and threatens to withdraw its support if it’s not granted. Such delays could push back the new system by as much as a year.
According to Keuleers, the bill will now only be approved by the second quarter of 2015 and all ancillary elements like the licensing process could take until the end of 2015.
Currently, Dutch lawmakers are calling for a 20% GGR tax rate. Henrik Tjärnström, chief executive of Unibet that such rate will push Dutch online punters towards unlicensed operators on the grey market. Both Tjärnström and Keuleers believe that a 10% rate is more realistic and fair and would make the Dutch online gambling market more positively dynamic and sustainable. |
