Ace Out - this situation occurs when a player is holding an ace high hand. Notice, that the player hasn't got even a pair in his hand. This phrase means that the player barely beat the opponent or won by deception.

 

Ace to Five - it means that straights and flushes are not counted. In this situation the ace can be used as a low card. The best possible hand is called a wheel and it is: A2345.

It is also called Red Dog.

Act - players need to do something when it is their turn. They can for example: check, call, fold, open bet, and raise.

Active Hand - it is a hand which is still in contention for a pot.

Add-on - in some Poker tournaments players have the possibility to buy additional chips.

 

Advantage - it is very similar to the edge. When the player has an advantage over an opponent.

 

Advantage Player - it is the person who wins the game by taking an advantage. Usually it is a term for a thief or cheater.

 

Advertisement - it is the act of advertising.

 

After Game(s) - it is the game which is played after the regular session of the game.

 

After-Hours Game - it is a private game which is played outside the casino.

 

Agent - the so called partner of a thief in a cheating scheme.

 

Ainsworth - when 6-2 are player�s first two cards.

 

Ajax - also known as a foamy cleanser. When A-J are player�s first two cards.

Ammo - it is another term for chips.

 

Ammunition - it is another term for chips.

 

An Ace Working - it is a situation when a player has an ace in hand.

 

Angle - it is a so called trick which enables players to increase their expectation at a game.

 

Announce - it is usually used in high or low games. Players have to declare if the hand is high/low or both.

 

Ante - there are two possible meanings: 1. it is a situation when one or more chips are put into the pot by all the players before starting the game, 2. it is a player to the left of the dealer, usually in an ante and straddle game.

 

Ante Bean - it is an ante or a chip which is used to ante.

 

Ante Up - it is putting an ante in the pot.

 

Ante Up. - it is a request made by the dealer, to one or more players to ante up.

 

Apple - also known as a big apple. It is commonly the biggest game in a particular club.

Asian Five-Card Stud - it is a California game which has a form of five-card stud played with a stripped deck.

 

Asian Games - it is an old name for California games which is still used in casinos and card-rooms.

Assault Rifle - players can find it in Omaha, hole cards that are A-K-4-7 of any suit.

B - it is the second position to the left of the dealer.

 

B-Dealer - also known as a Bottom Dealer, b-dealer, subway dealer, or cellar dealer. It is a person who is cheating by dealing cards from the bottom of the deck.

 

B-Game - usually, it is the second-highest game in a club.

 

Baby - it occurs as deuces through five in all games instead of lowball, and as an ace through five in lowball.

 

Back - there are two possible situations: 1) It is reverting to lowball, as in jacks back. 2) When a player finances another player.

 

Back Door Flush (Or Straight) - this situation appears when the player catches two cards to a flush.

 

Back into - there are two possible options: 1) it means that the player wins a pot unexpectedly. 2) End up with a hand other than the player was drawing to.

 

Back Seat - it occurs in a betting round. The player acts when most of the other players acted earlier.

Backer - it is a person who finances another player.

 

Backing - it is an amount of cash which is supplied by a backer.

 

Backs - the reverse sides of the cards.

 

Bad - it is played in low games in order to indicate on-nut low hands with a particular high card. A hand has a particular type and will not beat many other hands of that type. A rough 8 in ace to five lowball could be any eight high hand other than 8432A, although 8532A isn't too rough. Notice that rough is the opposite of smooth.

 

Bad Beat - It is a very strong hand, it can be a full house or higher, however it can be beaten by an even better hand.

 

Bad Game - it is the game in which the player becomes a loser

 

Bad-Beat Jackpot - this situation occurs in some card-rooms. It is a prize, which is shared by the players in a game, when a very good hand (it can be Aces full, or better) is beaten by a higher hand. Jackpots are usually financed by taking a drop ($1which is a common amount) from every pot. A typical division of the jackpot will give the losing hand 50%, the winning hand 25%, and the other players at the table share the remaining 25% of the Jackpot.

Beer Hand - this situation occurs in hold 'em when someone has 7-2 as their first two cards.

 

Beggar - it appears in high games. This is a hand without any pair as well as without cards higher than a 10.

 

Behind a Log - this situation occurs when a player is far ahead of a game and plays only with premium hands.

 

Belly Card - it is a card that makes an inside straight.

Bounty Tournament - it is a special tournament which offesr small amounts of money for knocking out another player.

 

Box - there are three possible options: 1) it is an empty rack of chips. 2) it is the so called box man. 3) by extension, it is the house dealer's location when dealing, usually heard as part of the phrase in the box, which literally means engaged in dealing.

Brag - it is a very old English card game which is an ancestor of poker.

Break a Game - this situation occurs when a player, usually a floor person, stops a game. It can be done, for example, when only a few players remain after other players have quit.

 

Break Even - this is to end up the game neither winning nor losing.

 

Break for Action - this situation occurs in lowball and it means to throw away part of a good hand to get a play from someone who would otherwise fold.

 

Break Off - it means to throw away part of a lowball hand in order to make a better hand.

 

Breaking Hand - also known as a two-way hand. This situation occurs in lowball and it is a hand topped by one of the following cards: 8, 9, or 10, which can be broken under pressure. For example, 9-4-3-2-A is a breaking hand, because the player is able to throw the 9 and draws to a wheel; however 9-8-7-3-A is not, because there is no place to break.

Bug - there are two possible options: 1) it is a joker which is used as a "partially wild card" in high draw poker and ace-to-five lowball. In high, it is good for aces, straights, and flushes. It makes a third (or fourth) ace, but does not improve any other pair. In a deck with the bug, a rank of hand exists higher than any straight flush: five aces. 2) it is a cheating device to hold a card to the underside of a table.

 

Buick - it refers to lowball. Buick is used to build a straight 8 engine.

In hold 'em, it is playing almost any two-card starting combination, and playing through to the river on almost anything that has a prayer of winning. In seven-card stud, it is the same with almost any three-card starting combination, and staying in until the situation is hopeless.

Money Plays - when said by the dealer, it means that a player has ordered chips and can bet up to the amount of cash they have on the table.

 

Mongrel - in hold'em, denotes a situation when the first two cards dealt are K-9.

 

Monkey Flush - denotes a combination of three cards of the same suit, but not in sequence.

 

Monster - the name for an almost certain hand to win.

 

Montana Banana - 9-2 as the two starting cards in hold'em.

 

Monte - the name for any card game which is played with three cards.

 

Moon - win all of high-low split, when having the best both high and low hands.

 

Moon Hand - in high-low split, a name for the hand that wins both high and low.

 

Mop Squeezer - the name for the Queen.

 

Mortal Cinch - 1. a hand which cannot lose, 2. the best possible hand.

 

Mortal Lock - the best possible hand of a particular class.

 

Mortal Nuts - the same as Mortal Lock.

 

Mortals - the same as Mortal Lock and Mortal Nuts. Sometimes also calles immortals.

 

Moss, Johnny - in hold'em, denotes a situation when the first two cards dealt are A-T.

 

Motion - another name for the act of betting.

 

Motown - a situation when the first to cards are J-5. Derives from the Jackson Five, a Motown singing group.

 

Mouth Bet - a bet made by announcing orally the bet size.

 

Move - 1. to bet all the chips one has, 2. cheating manipulation of the deck.

 

Move All in - to bet all the chips one has.

 

Move in - the same as "Move All in".

 

Move on the Pot - to bet strongly, the same as "Make a Play".

 

Mover - denotes a person who moves, a card thief.

 

Moves - denotes playing in a fancy way, sometimes accompanied by theatrics.

 

Muck - to discard a hand.

 

Mucker - a person, thief, palming cards.

 

Multi-Way - denotes a game which involves more than two players.

 

Multi-Way Pot - denotes a pot with more than two players.

 

Murder - a Chicago game variation, generally played as Seven Card Stud with a few exceptions: when the queen of spades is dealt up the game is reset, it is a wildcard when dealt down to a player. At showdown, the pot is split between player with the highest hand and with the highest spade up or down.

 

Mustache - a term of disgrace used especially in card rooms.

On Deck - on board, in the game.

 

On his Own - used to describe players playing with their own money.

 

On One's Belly - honestly.

One Pair - a hand containing one pair.

 

One-Card Draw - denotes a hand which needs one more card.

 

One-End Straight - a hand with 4 cards to a straight opened only at one end.

One-Eyed - the name for cards on which characters are shown from a profile, displaying only one eye, i.e. the jack of hearts, jack of spades, king of diamonds.

Open-Handed - denotes games in which each player's hand is exposed.

 

Opening Bet - an early bet, or bring-in bet.

 

Opening Requirements - state with what you need to open the game.

 

Option - a situation when a player posts a live blind and has the option to raise, even if no other player does so.

 

Option Card - it is a card that can be 'bought' by the player when all the cards constituting hands have been dealt. It serves as a replacement for other card in player's hand, up card replaces up card and down card another down. To get sucha card, the player has to put extra chips to the pot, however they are not considered a bet, since they don't have to be matched by others.

 

Oral Bet - a wager placed orally, by only announcing the amount one wishes to wager.

 

Oral Declaration - the player states what their next move is going to be: pass, fold, bet or raise.

 

Original Hand - player's first hand, their first 5 cards dealt.

 

Out - 1. the synonym for "I fold", meaning that the player ends the game, 2. denotes a card that will make your hand win, 3. eight outs are in hold'em in the straight draw (four cards of different rank to complete the straight).

 

Out of Action - 1. of an outside player, 2. of a damaged deck.

 

Out of Line - 1. of a bet made as if the hand was better than the one really holds (bluff), 2. inappropriate behaviour in a card room.

 

Out of Turn - of bet made before the action has come to the player. Such acting is not binding, and if e.g. a player says "I raise" before the action has come to them, when it actually does, they are not obliged to sustain the raise.

 

Out on a Limb - a bluff, hazardous situation.

 

Outdraw - a draw that makes player's hand better than others.

 

Out-of-Line Play - a bluff.

 

Outrun - the synonym of to beat.

 

Outs - cards improving the hand.

 

Outside - not an employee of a card room.

 

Over - referring to position - in front of, 2. in high poker, two pair, always said with the rank of high pair preceding and the rank of lower pair following.

 

Over Button - to take an over button means that one wants to play at higher limits, when all players have an over button, then the limits increase.

 

Over the Top - in a no-limit game, a raise on top of another raise.

 

Overbet - 1. a bet made out of proportion to the pot size, 2. bet larger than the pot.

 

Overcall - 1. a bet called after everybody else has done it.

 

Overcard - 1. in hold'em community cards, a card of higher rank than a pair in player['s hand. 2. in stud, a card (one of the down cards) higher than any of those shown by the opponents.

 

Overhand Cut - a movement of cuttin cards so that they restore the original order.

 

Overhand Shuffle - shuffling cards above the table, not in the standard way on the table, with sliding, dropping or tossing from one hand to other, untill all the cards are in the one hand.

 

Overhand Stack - shuffling cards in such a way so as to restore their original order, though it would appear that they are mixed.

 

Overhead - 1. what player has to play, 2. expenses for a card room.

Pass Out - to fold instead of calling.

 

Pass the Trash - a type of Seven Card Stud where cards are passed to left and right, sometimes multiple times.

 

Pass-and-Back-in - a type of draw poker where, if the pot has not been opened before the draw, you can either open the pot or pass, and hold your cards for a possible call or raise later, in case someone opens behind you.

 

Pass-and-out/Pass-Out - a type of draw poker where, if the post has not been opened before the draw, you must either open the pot or fold.

 

Passed Pot - in a double-limit high draw game a pot that has not been opened by anyone and will be re-dealt.

 

Pat - either a) not drawing any cards, b) a hand that doesn�t need to draw any cards.

 

Pat Hand - a hand that doesn�t need to draw any cards (so a straight, flush, full house or straight flush).

 

Patience Poker - a type of solitaire where the player tries to arrange 25 cards in a 5-by-5 grid so that the horizontals and verticals form the highest possible hands.

Pay Off - to call a bet by a player you think will beat you.

 

Pay Station - someone who rarely folds, instead frequently calls good hands.

 

Peach - a good hand in lowball.

Peek Poker - Seven Card Stud.

 

Peep-and-Turn - Mexican Stud, i.e. a type of Five Stud where players receive two cards face down, turn one card up and bet, after which they receive another face-down card and choose which to turn up.

 

Peewees - cards of low rank.

 

Pelter - a nonstandard hand in private games that has different variants: 9,5 and 2, with one card between either 9 and 5 or 5 and 2.

 

Penny Ante - a game with small limit.

 

Penultimate/Penultimate Card - the next-to-last card in the deck.

 

Percentage Bet/Call/Player - betting, calling or playing when you think she will have the best of it.

 

Perfect - either a) perfect low, i.e. the lowest possible hand in a high low game, b) the lowest hand of the rank of the highest card in lowball.

 

Perfect Catch - drawing the card that makes the best possible hand for you.

Proposition - an offer made by one player to another to play under specific circumstances in exchange for calling a bet.

Racehorse - a blind stud game, either five-, six-, or seven-card, where all cards are dealt face down.

 

Rachel - queen of diamonds.

 

Rag - a card that does not impact your hand.

 

Rag Off - to get a card on the river that doesn�t help you.

 

Ragged Flop - flop cards that are useless to everyone.

 

Rags - in poker and video poker; useless cards.

 

Railroad Hand - either a) J-6 as your first two cards in Texas Hold �Em, b) two pair hand with J�s and 6�s.

 

Rainbow - three or four cards of different suits.

 

Rainbow Hand - a hand with cards from each suit.

 

Raise - to make a higher wager into the pot.

 

Raise Back - to re-raise

 

Raise Blind - raising when you haven�t seen your cards.

 

Raise Out - betting more than another person would call and thus driving them out of the pot.

 

Raised Pot - a pot in which someone made a raise.

 

Raiser - a person that raises.

 

Raising Bread - to raise.

 

Ram and Jam/Ramming and Jamming - to bet and raise aggressively and frequently.

 

Rammer-Jammer - a person that bets and raises aggressively and frequently.

 

Rangdoodles - either a) progressive progressive, b) a hand or round in private games where the stakes are temporarily increased.

 

Rank Card - cards 2 through 10.

 

Rank of Cards/Hands - the hierarchy of cards determining what beats what.

 

Rap/Rap Pat - declining to bet or draw.

 

Raquel Welch - 3-8 as your first two cards in Texas Hold �Em.

 

Razz - Seven Card Stud Lowball.

 

Re-Buy - purchase additional chips after you lose your initial buy-in.

 

Re-Raise - any raises following the first raise in the round.

 

Re-Straddle - over blind. Made by the person three positions to the left of the dealer in a traveling blind game.

 

Red - the color most commonly used for $5 chips.

 

Redraw - drawing to an even better hand while you�re holding the nuts.

 

Release - to fold a hand, especially a good one, when you think it is beat.

 

Rembrandt - either a) face card, b) a type of home draw poker where all face cards are wild.

 

Repeat - to bet the same amount as on the previous round.

 

Replacement - either a) replacing a card in your hand with a draw card, b) twist.

 

Reverse Bridge Order - reversed order of suits according to bridge, i.e. clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades.

 

Rickey De Laet - a type of Mexican stud in which the rank of your hole card is wild for you.

 

Rien Ne Vas Plus - in roulette; no more bets.

 

River/River Card - the last card dealt in stud or Texas Hold �Em.

 

Rizlo - 2-4-6-8-10 of assorted suits in high poker.

 

Rock - someone playing a patient, tight game.

 

Rock Crusher - the best hand.

 

Rock Garden/Rocked Up - a game full of rocks, i.e. with little action.

 

Rocket - ace.

 

Rolled Up - three of a kind from first three cards in a Seven Card Stud.

 

Roodles - see Rangdoodles or Wangdoodles.

 

Rotating Bet - a scheme where each round of betting is started from the next player clockwise, i.e. the first round of betting is started by the person to the left of the dealer, the second round by the player two places to the left of the dealer and so on.

 

Rough - opposite of smooth, a hand of a particular type that can�t beat many other hands of that type.

 

Routine - straight flush.

 

Royal - short for royal flush.

 

Royal Brass Brazilians/ Royal Brazilians - the nuts.

 

Royal Flush - in poker and video poker; the best hand � 10, J, Q, K, A in the same suit.

 

Royal Six - 6-4 in lowball.

 

Royal Straight Flush - see Royal Flush.

 

Run - either a series of good cards or a straight.

 

Run Over/Run Over the Game - to play aggressively trying to intimidate and control other players.

 

Runner/Runner-Runner - a hand that is made on the last two cards dealt.

 

Running - two cards that you need coming as the last two cards dealt.

 

Running Bad - a losing streak.

 

Running Good - a winning streak.

 

Running Pair - in Texas Hold �Em and Seven Card Stud, two matching cards appearing in a row that do not match any other cards already on the board,

 

Runt - no-pair hand with mixed suits.

S - suited, e.g. KJS is king-jack suited.

 

Sail for - to lose.

 

Sailboats - two or more 4�s.

 

Salmon - 7, both the card and the lowball hand.

 

Saltiness - poor luck.

 

Salty - to have poor luck.

Sandbag - to play a strong hand in a way as if it was only a fair hand.

 

Sandwich - to raise before, and after a caller.

 

Santa Barbara - A-K as your first two cards in Texas Hold �Em.

 

Savannah - 7, both the card and the lowball hand.

 

Sawbuck - either $10 or a $10 bill.

 

Sawski - see Sawbuck.

 

Sax - 6, both the card and the lowball hand.

 

Sb - small blind.

 

Scared Card - either a card that makes a better hand more likely when it appears, or a third suited card on the river in Texas Hold �Em.

 

Scared Money - in poker and roulette; money you are afraid to lose.

 

Scoop - either a) to win both ways in a high-low poker with declare, or b) declare both ways in a high-low poker with declare.

 

Scoop Hand - a hand that wins the pot for being the hand for high when there is no low, or a hand that wins both ways in any high-low pot.

 

Scoop the Kitty - to win all the money put up by the players during a session.

 

Scoop the Pool - see Scoop the Kitty.

 

Scooper - either a) a player that declares both ways in a high low poker, b) a player that holds the hand that wins both ways in high-low pot, or c) a hand that wins both ways in any high-low pot.

 

Scooping Hand - see Scoop Hand.

 

Scootermockins - a term used to refer to dollars.

 

Score - a) to win, b) to win big, c) to win by cheating, d) the win (�I made a good score yesterday�).

 

Score a Big Touch - to win big, especially by cheating.

 

Scored Pair - to have a pair as your starting cards in Texas Hold �em or seven-card stud.

 

Scotch Straight - a nonstandard hand in high draw poker that is sometimes given value in private games. It consists of five even cards separated by one rank, i.e. 2-4-6-8-10. When without value, this hand is called rizlo.

 

Scourge of Scotland - 9 of diamonds.

 

Screwed Down - to play very tight.

 

Screwy Louise - a type of seven card stud where cards are passed to left and right. Other names include pass the trash and Anaconda.

 

Second Best - a hand that loses the showdown.

 

Second Button - a pair with the second highest card on the flop.

 

Second Hand - the second person to act in the round.

 

Second Nuts - the second-best possible hand for the situation, or the actual second-best hand in a situation in Texas Hold �em.

 

Second Pair - see Second Button.

 

Second Story - raising while holding a good hand.

 

See - calling.

 

See a Bet - calling.

 

Seed - either the ace card or a $1 chip.

 

Sell - to bet less than the maximum with a very strong hand in a spread limit game.

 

Sell a Hand - see Sell.

 

Send Around - to play a strong hand as if it were a fair one only.

 

Send it in - betting large in a no-limit game.

 

Sequence - 5 cards in sequence but not in suit.

 

Sequence Flush - obsolete term for Straight flush.

 

Sergeant from K Company - a king card.

 

Sergeants from K Company - two or more K�s.

 

Set - either a) four of a kind, b) three of a kind in Texas Hold �em and stud, or c) to arrange two hands in pai gow poker.

 

Set All In - bet all chips in a no-limit game.

 

Set of Fours - four of a kind.

 

Set Over Set - in Texas Hold �em either a) one player�s pocket pair against another�s, where the board cards don�t help neither of them, or b) one player�s set (three of a kind) against another�s.

 

Set Someone in - bet all of someone�s chip in a no-limit game. .

 

Set Up - make other players think you always act the same way in certain situations in order to take advantage of that.

 

Seven / 8 - seven-card stud high-low split with an 8 qualifier for low.

 

Seven Card Stud - a type of poker where players receive seven cards, two down, four up and a final card down, with betting rounds starting after the first up card.

 

Seven Deuces Wild - a Seven Card Stud where all deuces are wild.

 

Seven Rule - a rule in lowball saying that the player has to bet a 7 or better after a the draw.

 

Seven Stud Hi Low - a Seven Card Stud where the player with the lowest hand gets half the pot.

 

Seven-Card Flip - a Seven Card Stud where players receive four cards face down and turn any of them up before betting starts.

 

Seven-Stud - see Seven Card Stud.

 

Seven-Stud / 8 - see Seven Card Stud.

 

Seven-Toed Pete - see Seven Card Stud.

 

Seven-Twenty-Seven - a type of stud played in home games where players receive one down card, make bets and then get one or more cards face up.

 

Seventh Street - the final betting round in Seven Card Stud.

 

Sex - 6, either the card or the lowball hand.

 

Shake-Shake - Pai Gow Poker.

 

Shark/Sharker/Sharp - either a) expert player, b) thief, c) loan shark.

 

Sharp Top - either 4 or A.

 

Shed - to discard.

 

Shifting Sands - a type of Mexican stun where the rank of hole card is wild for that player.

 

Shirley - a person that has a very timid style of play.

 

Shoe Clerk - either a) a weak player, b) someone not serious about a particular pot, or c) someone who does not stay for a raise (possibly out of fear).

 

Shoot it Up - to raise.

 

Shoot the Moon - either a) to win both ways in a high-low poker with declare, or b) declare both ways in a high-low poker with declare.

 

Shoot the Pot/Shoot the Pot Up - to raise.

 

Short Buy - a buy-in that is smaller than the minimum required for the game.

 

Short Call - generating a side pot by going all in and calling less than the full bet.

 

Short Flush - a four-card flush.

 

Short Pair/Shorts - a small pair in high draw poker.

 

Short Straight - four-card straight.

 

Shorts Studs - Five Card Stud and its variants.

 

Short Cards - obsolete name for poker.

 

Shotgun - a Five Card Draw with additional betting rounds.

 

Show - showdown.

 

Show cards - up cards.

 

Show Five Cards - a type of seven stud played in home game, often played high-low, where players receive seven cards face down, which are exposed one at a time, followed by a round of betting.

 

Show Tickets - either a) a type of draw poker where the third-best hand wins, or b) the third-best hand in a showdown.

 

Showdown - comparing all active hands after betting is over to decide which hand win the pot.

 

Shuck - either to discard, or substitute (replace a card in stud).

 

Shut Out - bet a big amount so that another player can�t or will not call in a no-limit game

 

Sickening - 6, either the card or the lowball hand.

 

Sickle - four lowest cards to a wheel.

 

Side - side pot.

 

Side Arms - the lower pair in a two pair hand.

 

Side Card - either a) a card that is not worth anything in a given hand, b) a card that resolves a tie between two-pair hands, or c) fifth card in a two pair hand.

 

Side Money - side pot.

 

Side Pot - a separated pot created when one player runs out of money.

 

Siegfried and Roy - two Q�s as your first two cards in Texas Hold �em.

 

Simoleon - either $1 or $1 chip.

 

Single Limit - a type of limit poker where all bets are in multiples of the same increment.

 

Single-Blind Game - a traveling blind game with one blind.

 

Single-Handed Poker - either a) five card draw poker, high, no wilds, or b) an early type of poker where players receive five cards and bet on them and there is now draw.

 

Six Tits - a vulgar term for three Q�s.

 

Six-Card Option - a type of Six Card Stud played high-low in home games. Players are dealt one card face down and one face up, make bets, then get five up cards with rounds of betting between each card, then a down card is dealt, and then a twist, and one more round of betting.

 

Sixth Street - in Seven-Card Stud this is the sixth card dealt.

 

Sizz - to be on a rush, winning several hands in a short amount of time.

 

Skating - to bluff.

 

Skeet - a nonstandard hand sometimes used in home games of draw poker. It consists of 2, 5, 9, one card between 2 and 5 and one card between 5 and 9. It is usually ranked between three of a kind and a straight.

 

Skeet Flush - a nonstandard hand sometimes used in home games of draw poker. A Skeet in one suit, which is usually ranked somewhere above a straight, sometimes even above four of a kind.

 

Skin - either $1 or a $1 bill.

 

Skip Straight/Skipper - a nonstandard hand sometimes used in home games of draw poker. The hand consists of cards in a series separated by one rank, e.g. 3-5-7-9-J. It is usually ranked between three of a kind and a straight.

 

Sky�s the Limit - a term for no-limit games.

 

Slick - The best possible low hand with a specific high card, e.g. 8-5-3-2-A is a slick 8.

 

Slip/Slip it - to pass while trying to implicate you had a strong hand, while in reality it was a medium hand at best.

 

Slip a Hand - see Sandbag.

 

Slippery Anne - Q of spades.

 

Slippery Sandbag - in poker to check with a very strong hand and, if bet into, not raising, but rather only calling.

 

Slow - to play passively.

 

Slow Play - Play weakly with a strong hand, i.e. checking instead of betting, calling instead of raising.

 

Slow-Down Bet - to make a smaller bet than expected in a given situation in no-limit games.

 

Slowball - a slow lowball game.

 

Small Bet - the smaller bet in a double-limit games.

 

Small Blind - made by the players to the dealer�s left, is the smaller compulsory bet.

 

Small Game - a game with small stakes.

 

Small Nickel - $50, either in a bill, in cash or in chips.

 

Small One - $100, either in a bill, in cash or in chips.

 

Small Play - playing with small stakes.

 

Smoke on the Water - to raise.

 

Smooth - see Slick.

 

Smooth Call - calling when you have a good enough hand to raise.

 

Snakebit - to have a bad luck.

 

Snap Off - to get a card on the end (e.g. last community card in Texas Hold �Em) that allows you to beat a leading hand.

 

Snatch Game - an alternative name for rake game.

 

Snoozer - a �partially wild� joker in high draw and ace-to-five lowball.

 

Snowball - a hand that is not worth anything.

 

Snowmen - two or more 8�s.

 

Social Game - a friendly game of poker.

 

Society - chips of large denominations.

 

Sock it Up - to raise.

 

Soft - either a) see Slick, b) a lowball limit game with higher than usual stakes.

 

Soft Play - to play without putting pressure on another person.

 

Solid - a conservative style of play.

 

Something - an usually large bet in no-limit games.

 

Sore Spot - 4.

 

Soup/ Soup a Hand - revealing your hand in a showdown.

 

Southern Cross - a type of Cincinnati where players receive five cards face down and nine cards are dealt face down in the form of a cross, with five vertical and five horizontal cards. Players can combine any and all of these to form a five-card hand.

 

Spades - used to refer to either the suit or to a spade flush (five cards, all spades).

 

Spadoodles - the suit spades.

 

Speak - to bet.

 

Special Hand - nonstandard or premium hand.

 

Speed/Speeding - playing recklessly or gambling excessively.

 

Speed Hold �Em - a variant of Texas Hold �Em in which players receive four cards, discard two and then five cards are flopped.

 

Speedup after Fold - disables animations and sound effects after you fold so that you can instantly see the result of the hand.

 

Spike - either a) an Ace, b) usually in Texas Hold �Em means the card you specifically need to match your hand appears on the board.

 

Spit - a type of widow poker called Spit in the ocean, or the up card in this game (Spit Card).

 

Spit in the Ocean - a type of widow poker where players receive four cards face down and one card face up is dealt in the center. This card is wild and part of everyone�s hand.

 

Split Openers - discarding one or more openers in draw poker.

 

Split Pair - a pair with one face up card and one hole card in stud games.

 

Split Pot - either a) in a high-low split game the pot divided between holders of high and low hands, b) a pot shared by two or more players, which are in a tie.

 

Split Two Pair - a two pair hand where one of each ranks appears also on the board.

 

Split Week - an inside straight.

 

Split-Pot Game - either a) high-low split game, b) any other game where the pot is split between different people depending on the rules.

 

Spoke - wheel card, any ace, 2, 3, 4 or 5 in ace-to-five lowball.

 

Spot - a card, e.g. 6-spot when referring to 6.

 

Spot Card - any card from 2 through 10.

 

Spots - the suit symbols on a non-court card that indicates its rank.

 

Spotter - any card from 4 through 10.

 

Spread/Spread a Hand - a showdown.

 

Spread Limit - a game where limits are somewhere between single limit and no limit.

 

Spring - to make a sudden large bet.

 

Square - honest. Can be used to refer to a person, deal, deck or game.

 

Squeeze - a situation where two players raise and re-raise each other, forcing the player between them to call in order to remain in the pot.

 

Squeeze Bet - either a) see Squeeze, b) a bet that aims to extract additional chips from a player that is not likely to win a pot.

 

Stack Off - to bet all your chips in no limit games.

 

Stack Poker - going all in (stack off) every time it is possible in no-limit games.

 

Stake - the amount needed to get into a game.

 

Stand - deciding not to take any cards at the time of the draw in a draw game.

 

Standoff - either a) calling a raise, b) a tie.

 

Stand Pat - decline to draw cards.

 

Stand Up - win with a hand in a situation where other hands are trying to catch winning cards against it.

 

Standard Deck - a deck consisting of 52-cards in four suits (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades), 13 cards each (A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, K, Q, K).

 

Star - the joker.

 

Start the Action - to make the first bet.

 

Starting Hand - your first two cards in Texas Hold �Em or first three cards in Seven Card Stud.

 

Stay/Stay in - remaining in a hand with a call.

 

Stayer - either a) a hand that is worth to call with, but not raise or initiate betting, b) an active player in a draw game.

 

Steal Position - a late position (middle blind or the dealer) in a blinds game.

 

Steam - either a) to raise, b) play poorly and irrationally from being upset.

 

Steam Bet - a bet made by someone who plays irrationally from being upset.

 

Steel Wheel - a straight flush with a five high (A2345).

 

Stenographer - Queen.

 

Step Bet - stakes that have more than one limit, where one limit is for early rounds, and the other for later rounds.

 

Step Out - to bet (often large) in no-limit games.

 

Steppin� Out - to bet.

 

Stick - to stand in a draw game.

 

Stone - complete, e.g. in reference to your hand.

 

Stormy Weather - a type of widow poker where each player receives four cards face down and three cards face up are dealt in the center. Players can draw to their hands. The face down cards are turned up one after another with betting rounds in-between and players can use one of them to complete their hands.

 

Straddle - to over blind, i.e. put in a blind when one is already present.

 

Straddle Game - either a) a blind and straddle game, b) a traveling blind game (most often with three blinds).

 

Straight - in poker and video poker; 5 cards in sequence, but not in the same suit.

 

Straight Bet - see Single Number Bet.

 

Straight Draw - either a) a hand that has four hands to a straight, b) a standard five-card-draw high poker.

 

Straight Flush - in poker and video poker; five consecutive cards in the same suit. An Ace high straight flush is called royal flush, royal straight flush or royal.

 

Straight Limit - a type of poker where all bets are in multiples of the same increment.

 

Straight Poker - either a) a five card draw poker, high, no wilds, b) an old type of poker where players received five cards and bet only on them, there was no draw.

 

Straightening/Straighting - drawing to a straight.

 

Street - sometimes used to refer to cards that come out one at a time, e.g. the turn in Texas Hold �Em is called the fourth street.

 

Stripped Deck/Pack - a deck without certain cards, used to play special games.

 

Strong Hand - a hand that will probably win the pot.

 

Struggle - to take no cards during a draw in a draw game.

 

Strychnine - a straight 9 in lowball.

 

Stu - asking for two cards in a draw game.

 

Stud - a type of poker games where some of players� cards are exposed, very often used as a short for Seven Card Stud.

 

Substitute - to receive a twist, that is replace a card in stud.

 

Suck - to draw cards.

 

Suction/Suction Bet - a small bet on a good hand in a big bet game to lure player to call or raise.

 

Sudden Death - a low five-card stud.

 

Suicide King - King of Hearts.

 

Suited - two or more cards of the same suit.

 

Suited Connectors - two cards in sequence, in the same suit in Texas Hold �Em.

 

Summertime Hand - while not really a strong hand, it is better than average and has a chance to win the pot.

 

Super-Full - four of a kind.

 

Sweat - to win by playing carefully and avoiding risks.

 

Sweep - see Scoop a).

 

Sweeper - either a) a person that declares both ways in a high-low poker with declare, b) a hand that wins both ways in high-low pot, or c) the player that has such a hand.

 

Sweeping Hand - a hand that wins both ways in high-low pot.

 

Sweeten the Pot - to raise.

 

Swing - either a) declaring both ways in a high-low poker with declare, b) win both ways in a high-low poker with declare, c) win the whole pot in a high-low poker game without declare by having the best hand for one way and no one qualifying to win for the other way.

 

Swing Hand - a hand that wins both ways in high-low pot.

 

Swinger - see Sweeper.

 

S�k� - a type of five-card stud, where four-straight has a higher rank than one pair, four-flush is higher than four-straight and under two pair.

T - a 10.

 

Table Cop - a person that calls in order to keep other players honest.

 

Table Stakes - a rule according to which players can only wager money they have on the table at the beginning of a hand. Sometimes also refers to no-limit games.

 

Table Stakes Limit - see Table Stakes.

 

Tahoe - also lazy pineapple. A type of pineapple game in which you do not discard any of your three down cards and can use one or two of them at the showdown to form your five-card hand.

 

Tahoe Split - a type of poker game, seven-card stud high-low split, with an 8 qualifier for low.

 

Take a Bath - to lose really bad.

 

Take it or Leave it - a type of five-card stud, high-low home game.

 

Take Off a Card - making a single bet so that you can see one more card.

 

Take Off the Gloves - to bully your opponent by playing aggressively.

 

Take the Lead - betting or raising when you are passed to, or doing so aggressively.

 

Take the Odds - either wagering less money on a proposition than you think you can win or wagering all your money in one bet in no-limit games.

 

Take the Worst of it - to fight the odds by making unfavorable wagers.

 

Takeout - the smallest buy-in need to take part in the particular game.

 

Talking Chips - sometimes also called lobbying or walking chips. Your winnings, which allow you to play in a more relaxed way and not concentrate too much on the game.

 

Tall Pot - a very large pot.

 

Tap - to bet all your chips, i.e. go all in.

 

Tap City - to become broke.

 

Tap Off - see Tap.

 

Tap Out - see Tap.

 

Tap Someone - betting all of another person�s chips in a no-limit game.

 

Tap you - see Tap Someone.

 

Tap-Off / Tapoff - betting all your of another person�s chips.

 

Tapioca - either being broke or betting all your chips.

 

Tapped - being broke.

 

Tapped out - see Tapped.

 

Telephone - a type of home poker, a widow game where players receive five cards face down and five cards are placed face down on the table.

 

Tender Hand - a hand you would be afraid to bet, because while it is a favorite on the pot, it�s also vulnerable to a raise.

 

Tennessee - either a type of poker very similar to Cincinnati, or a hand that is topped by a 10 in low poker.

 

Tennessee Toddy - a hand that is topped by a 10 in low poker.

 

Tension - either two or more 10�s or a hand that is topped by a 10 in low poker.

 

Terce - also tierce. Three cards to a straight flush.

 

Terce Major - also tierce major. A-K-Q in the same suit.

 

Texas Hold �em - a type of poker game where players get two pocket cards and five face-up community cards are on the table. Players can use any of the cards to make the best seven card hand.

 

Texas Tech - also called Wild Annie. A type of game that is a cross between stud poker and draw poker. Each player is dealt three cards face down, players bet and receive two more cards with bets made after each card is dealt. After that players draw cards like in draw poker and then expose one card and make bets. Cards are exposed and bets are made after each until every player has one card face down left.

 

Third base - the person to the right of the dealer.

 

Third Hand - the person that sits three seats to the left of the dealer.

 

Third Nuts - in Texas Hold �em this means you hold the third-best possible hand in a given situation.

 

Third Pair - in Texas Hold �em this means you make a pair of one of your hole cards and the third-highest card on the board.

 

Third Street - the first round where you bet on the first three cards in stud games.

 

Three - a hand that needs three cards.

 

Three Deuces - usually three 2�s and two other cards, sometimes this phrase is used sometimes for A-A-K-K-Q hand.

 

Three Fates - three Q�s.

 

Three Flush - Being two cards away from a flush, i.e. having three cards of the same suit in hour hand.

 

Three of a Kind - in poker and video poker; also Trips. Three cards of the same rank.

 

Three-Bet - making a third bet, that is raising a raise.

 

Three-Blind Traveling Blind Game - a type of traveling blind poker with three mandatory blinds: one by the dealer, one by the player left to him and one by the player two seats left of him.

 

Three-Card Draw - see Three.

 

Three-Card Hop - also cathop. To beat another hand with a three-card draw.

 

Three-Card Monte - a card game played with three cards.

 

Three-Card Poker - see Three-Card Monte.

 

Three-Thirty-Three - a type of home stud game, where each players gets one down card and after a round betting more cards are dealt face up.
