Geolocation in New Jersey still problematic

Thursday, 28 November 2022 09:26

Online gambling in New Jersey is now live for two days and people are still experiencing glitches related to geolocation systems.

newjersey

Geolocation technology that is supposed to verify players’ locations in order to block anyone trying to access gambling websites from outside New Jersey.

It appears the systems are still working ‘too well’ and are shutting out players that are within the state. The problem has been known since the trial period started on 21st but operators vowed to fix it for the official launch. Currently, the issue seem to be affecting customers playing at sites belonging to Borgata and Caesars Interactive Entertainment.

Joe Lupo, vice president of operations of Borgata said the casino is working to fix the problem. “Yes, we are making very steady progress. We recognize some difficulties and are testing and repairing the platform, which we believe are normal for this early in the launch, but are committed to working day and night to provide a quality product.”

Meanwhile, Seth Palansky, a spokesman for Caesars, said that various problems are not caused by the casino’s systems but by users’ machines.

“Things have been overblown thus far. In fact, I would say we have had zero software glitches with our platforms. … The majority of issues we are seeing are on the user end, typically tied to browsers, plug-ins and other programs running at the same time,” stated Palansky. He did however confirm that geofencing did cause some connection problems. “Geolocation appears to be the biggest issue on our end and we are working with our provider to help rectify some of the false positives,” he commented.

Robert Heller, a gaming industry consultant and president of Spectrum Gaming Capital believes that such issues will not cause long term problems for the New Jersey industry. “I think absolutely, these problems are temporary. The most important thing slowing it down may be that it’s a new business,” he said.

Land casino Resorts Atlantic City has published a “coming soon” website at resortscasino.com.

resorts

The site is currently garnering emails from interested parties, a typical tactic when an online casino operation is nearing launch phase.

Resorts Atlantic City is an interesting company that has been in talks with Pokerstars as that company seeks a suitable land casino partner to open the door for it to enter the New Jersey market, subject to the licensing approval of the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement, which is currently holding an application.

More recently, online gambling groups NYX Gaming Group Ltd. & Sportech plc announced a joint venture titled SNG Interactive with the objective - subject to licensing approval - of launching an online casino operation with Resorts in New Jersey (see previous reports).

That triggered speculation that Pokerstars, now under the new ownership of the Amaya Group, may be angling to become the online poker arm of the SNG-Resorts initiative....but again, that would be contingent on licensing approval from the DGE, which has reportedly held discussions with Amaya.

Resorts Atlantic City is owned by the Bailey family, which in 2012 turned over operational control of the land casino to Mohegan Gaming Advisors, which operates casinos in several northeastern US states.

GeoComply, the company supplying geolocation technology in New Jersey, announced that it now excludes only one in every ten users that are within the border of the state.

geocomply

The reduction to about 10% of “false negatives” is the result of fine-tuning and adjustments to the technology used by most of operators in New Jersey, said Anna Sainsbury, CEO of GeoComply. According to her, this is 35% below the level that was observed during the launch of online gambling in Nevada earlier this year. Currently, the technology is supposed to be accurate “to within a few meters” and should allow most players along the state’s borders.

The state still has to deal with problems related to funding accounts by credit cards, which are a result of the federal legislation that requires financial institutions to block ‘illegal’ transactions. The situation is already improving and regulators and banks are cooperating to work it out completely. Until then, direct bank transfers are the best mean to fund accounts.

David Rebuck, director of the New Jersey Division for Gaming Enforcement believes the first week had gone well. "There was definitely tension. At each of the casinos, there were 30, 40, 50 people working on this. On the first night, there were a lot of frowns, people looking to get through that first night. By Sunday night, I saw a lot more smiles. That's when I knew it was probably going to be OK,” he said.

New Jersey reaches 51,000 gambling accounts

Wednesday, 04 December 2022 09:46

New Jersey is seeing a constant grow of online gambling accounts being created and has now reached 51,000 accounts.

newjersey

The six operating casinos from Atlantic City: the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino, the Tropicana Casino & Resort, Bally’s Atlantic City and Caesars Atlantic City reported encouraging levels of business. The last, seventh casino, The Golden Nugget Atlantic City is working out its last-minute problems with certain systems and should join the rest sometime this week.

On Thanksgiving Day alone the state saw 5,000 new accounts created. According to the Associated Press news agency, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement could not say how many individual players have created accounts, as some of them probably signed at more than one site.

Will New Jersey earn as much as it hopes?

Monday, 09 December 2022 09:27

Lawmakers in New Jersey have expressed doubts over whether the state can reach tax revenue figures forecast after the full launch of online gambling.

newjersey

The state has a tax rate of 15% and has initially forecast $180 million in taxes, but this was later reduced in the approved budget. According to the reports, Governor Chris Christie predicted a revenue of $160 million by July 2014.

“From the get-go, we thought the number was, frankly, absurd. I never thought the state was going to hit the mark, even the revised mark. Both of those numbers are unrealistically optimistic,” said New Jersey Senator Jim Whelan.

Whelan estimated that the tax revenue would be “well under $100 million given the time constraints.”

Estimates of the tax income to be generated by online gambling in New Jersey are in general contrasting. The Moody’s Investors released a report that state the revenue would be between $250 million and $500 million in the first year, while a report by Fitch Ratings forecast tax income between $200 million and $300 million.

“Although some market participants will benefit, New Jersey online gambling is not going to be the saviour of the (Atlantic City) casino market. In some ways, it will be detrimental because it has kept brick-and-mortar supply in the market when the level of demand dictates that some supply should be removed,” said the Fitch report.

On Friday, the Golden Nugget has received clearance to start offering internet gambling in New Jersey.

newjersey

While six other casinos have been cleared on November 25, the Golden Nugget was restricted to trial play until it worked out certain issues and glitches and said it would not open until it was ready to provide a first-class experience.

The Golden Nugget is now the seventh of Atlantic City’s 12 casinos to offer internet gambling. The list includes the Borgata, the two Trump casinos, the Tropicana, Bally’s and Caesars. Resorts also has received clearance, but its partner PokerStars has been barred from New Jersey for two years.
